Double Tree by Hilton (Westerwood Golf)

A great golf course requires two things: a spectacular setting and a great build. Westerwood achieves both these objectives in some style. Situated atop Kilsyth Hill, the course boasts gorgeous views of the Campsie Hills and Kelvin Valley. If you can take your eyes off the scenery for long enough to tee up, you’ll find a highly playable course, one that is fiendishly challenging in places but worth the endeavour. The first nine is relatively straightforward, but things start to intensify from there on – watch out for the tricky 13th that involves clearing a large pond. The par 72 course was designed by Dave Thomas and Seve Ballasteros and is linked with the Westerwood Hotel and Golf Resort. Hotel guests can take the short stroll from the luxury retreat to the fairway, which is also open to non-residents. Other notable holes to contend with include the 6th, with its fiendish bunker, and the 15th, which incorporates a 40-foot rock face and is known as The Waterfall. The Westerwood has saved the best till last however with a stunning fairway that’s flanked by fir and birch trees and thick heather. Keep your aim true and your eyes on the flag and your reward will be a refreshing drink back at the hotel while you relive the highlights of the day.
